Tostado lies in the far north of Santa Fe province, where the pampas give way to the drier Chaco plain. The town is laid out on a regular grid of square blocks, the kind of plan common to Argentine railway towns, with a central plaza and streets running out in straight lines until they dissolve into farmland and cattle country.
The Río Salado passes near the town, meandering across a landscape so flat that its bends and old channels show clearly from above. Tostado serves as a service centre for a large rural district, and the roads leaving town reach long distances before meeting the next settlement.
A Tostado map poster is an exercise in quiet geometry. The orderly blocks of the centre sit against the irregular curves of the river and the surrounding field boundaries, and in black and white the contrast between planned grid and open plain becomes the whole story of the place.
