Toulouse is built on the Garonne, which makes a wide bend through the city on its way to the Atlantic. The historic centre sits on the east bank, a dense area of narrow streets around the Capitole and the Basilica of Saint-Sernin. Its buildings are mostly made of pinkish brick, which gave Toulouse its name as the Pink City.
The Canal du Midi, built in the seventeenth century to link the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, curves around the north and east of the centre. It meets the Canal de Brienne and the Garonne near the Ponts-Jumeaux. Further out, the périphérique ring road encloses the inner city, and later districts spread across the flat land beyond it.
A Toulouse map poster traces all these lines of water and road. Several bridges cross the river, including the Pont Neuf, and islands such as the Île du Ramier sit in the channel to the south. The city is also the centre of the European aerospace industry, with Airbus sites to the west near the airport.
