Trujillo Alto lies in northeastern Puerto Rico, directly south of San Juan. It is part of the San Juan metropolitan area, but its landscape is very different from the flat coastal districts. The land here rises into green hills, and the municipality is crossed by the Río Grande de Loíza, the island's largest river by volume.
South of the town, the river is dammed to form Lago Loíza, also known as Lago Carraízo, one of the main reservoirs supplying water to the San Juan area. From above, its irregular shape, with many narrow arms reaching into the valleys, is the most striking feature on the map.
A Trujillo Alto map poster shows the contrast between the denser residential streets in the north, closer to San Juan, and the winding roads that follow the hills and valleys further south. Urbanisations with looping streets sit on the slopes, and the reservoir's branching outline gives the composition an unusual, organic form.
