Tsimlyansk sits on the Don river in Rostov Oblast in southern Russia, just downstream of the dam that holds back the Tsimlyansk Reservoir. The reservoir, created in the early 1950s as part of the Volga–Don waterway project, is one of the largest bodies of water in the region. On a map it fills much of the frame with open water.
The town lies along the riverbank below the dam, with a hydroelectric station and locks forming a strong engineered line across the Don. Streets run in a mostly regular pattern back from the river onto the steppe, with gardens and vineyards at the edges.
Tsimlyansk is also known for wine, especially the sparkling Tsimlyanskoye, made in this part of the Don valley. A Tsimlyansk map poster shows a town defined by water: the river, the dam and the vast reservoir that took its name.
