Tumsar is in Bhandara district in the Vidarbha region of eastern Maharashtra. The Wainganga River flows nearby, and the surrounding land is dotted with rice fields and the traditional irrigation tanks that are common in this part of India. On a map, the town is a dense cluster of streets in a landscape of scattered water bodies and fields.
Tumsar has long been a trading centre for the rice grown in the district, and its markets and mills reflect that. Tumsar Road railway station, a short distance from the town, links it to the main line running through Vidarbha. The mineral-rich hills of the region, known for manganese, lie within reach.
The old town has narrow, closely packed lanes, while newer areas spread outward along the main roads. Around it, the irregular shapes of tanks and the curve of the river fill the map with organic forms.
