Tunduru Map Poster & Print
Tunduru lies in Ruvuma Region in the far south of Tanzania, on the main road linking Songea in the west with Masasi and the coast in the east. On a map that road is the dominant line, and the town has grown along and around it. Near the centre, side streets form a loose grid before dissolving into tracks and scattered homesteads in the surrounding bush.
The district is widely known for its gemstones. Alluvial deposits in the riverbeds around Tunduru have yielded sapphires and other stones, which draw miners and traders from across the region and beyond. Much of the land between settlements is still open woodland, crossed by seasonal streams that show up as thin, winding lines.
