Uniondale lies in central Nassau County on Long Island, just east of Hempstead. On a map it is almost all suburban blocks, a dense pattern of short residential streets broken up by a few large, distinctive shapes. Hempstead Turnpike runs across it east to west, and the Meadowbrook State Parkway forms a firm line along its eastern side.
Those large shapes are what make Uniondale recognisable from above. The oval of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum sits within its surrounding lots, and part of Hofstra University's campus, with its lawns and athletic fields, lies within the hamlet. Office towers and parking areas near the parkway interchanges add broad, open forms among the houses.
