Vāda is a town in Maharashtra's Palghar district. It lies inland from the Arabian Sea coast, north-east of Mumbai, in country that rises gradually toward the hills of the Western Ghats. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets at a meeting of roads, with fields, streams and scattered villages spreading out on every side.
The street pattern is irregular rather than planned. Lanes branch off the main roads and fold back on each other, and the density drops quickly toward the edges, where individual plots and farm tracks take over. In a monochrome print that shift from a tight centre to a loose outer area produces a soft, organic shape with no hard borders.
