Vallentuna is in Stockholm County, north of the capital, beside the long, narrow lake Vallentunasjön. From above, the town centre sits close to the water, with residential areas spreading out among fields, patches of forest and older farm roads. It feels suburban without being part of the city's continuous sprawl.
The Roslagsbanan narrow-gauge railway links Vallentuna to Stockholm, and its line runs through the town as a clear feature on any map. The area is also known for its runestones, including stones associated with Jarlabanke, the Viking-age local magnate who left a notable series of inscriptions around here.
