Valsād is a town in southern Gujarat, set close to the Arabian Sea on the lower course of the Auranga river. From above, the map is shaped by three parallel lines. The main Mumbai to Ahmedabad railway runs north to south through the town, the national highway follows the same direction inland, and the coast lies a short distance to the west.
The region is well known in India for its mangoes. Valsad district is a major centre for Alphonso, locally called Hafus, and orchards cover much of the surrounding countryside. Tithal beach, on the coast just west of town, is the local seaside, with its dark sand and wide tidal flats. The Auranga's estuary and creeks shape the land between town and sea.

Newer neighbourhoods spread outward, and the river curves around the south side. When the frame includes the coast, the tidal creeks and the shoreline add soft, organic forms to an otherwise linear composition.
