Vanadzor is the third-largest city in Armenia and the centre of Lori Province, in the north of the country. It lies in the valley of the Pambak River, surrounded by forested mountains. On a map, the city stretches along the valley floor, with streets following the river and side valleys where smaller streams join it.
The city has had several names. It was Karakilisa before the Soviet period and Kirovakan during it, and it became Vanadzor in 1993. In the Soviet era it grew as an industrial centre, particularly for chemicals, and its large planned districts still date from that time.
A Vanadzor map poster shows how strongly the mountains shape the city. The urban area is long and narrow, and the rivers form lines through its middle. The surrounding slopes close off the composition on both sides, and the Soviet-era neighbourhoods add a more regular pattern to the valley floor.
