Vancouver, Washington, sits on the north bank of the Columbia River directly across from Portland, Oregon. On a map the river forms a wide, strong southern edge, and two interstate bridges cross it to the south. The downtown grid starts near the waterfront and extends north and east into broad suburban districts.
The city grew from Fort Vancouver, a Hudson's Bay Company trading post established in the 1820s and now a national historic site with a reconstructed stockade. The fort grounds and the adjoining open land show up as a large green space just east of downtown, close to the river.
A Vancouver map poster, framed on the Washington side of the Columbia, shows a city with its own shape rather than just a suburb of Portland. The waterfront, the bridges and the orderly downtown blocks give the print a clear structure, and the river fills the lower part of the frame.
