Vanier sits just east of downtown Ottawa, across the Rideau River from Sandy Hill and Lowertown. It was a separate city, first called Eastview and renamed in 1969 after Governor General Georges Vanier, until it was amalgamated with Ottawa in 2001. On a map it is a small, dense neighbourhood with a tight grid of residential streets.
The Rideau River forms its western edge in a gentle curve, with parkland along the bank. Montreal Road, the main commercial street, runs through the centre from west to east. Vanier has long been one of the main francophone communities in Ottawa, and its churches, schools and community institutions reflect that heritage.
