Venturosa is a municipality in the agreste of Pernambuco, the transitional zone between Brazil's humid coast and the dry sertão further inland. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets at the centre of a much larger rural area, with roads leading out across hilly, semi-arid land.
Life in the agreste has long revolved around farming and livestock, adapted to a climate with a long dry season. On the map, the town's blocks are tightly packed around its central square and church, while the countryside around it shows scattered farms, tracks and reservoirs that store water for the dry months.
