Viçosa lies in the interior of Alagoas, in northeastern Brazil, in the zona da mata, the humid, hilly belt between the coast and the drier sertão. The Paraíba do Meio River runs through the municipality. The surrounding land is a mix of wooded hills, pasture and cane fields.
From above, the town fits itself into uneven ground. The main streets follow the valley and the lower slopes, and side streets climb toward higher neighbourhoods. The historic centre, with its church and square, occupies the flatter land, and newer districts extend outward in less regular patterns wherever the terrain allows.
A Viçosa map poster is less about grids and more about the way a town settles into hills. The river gives the composition a curving spine, and the streets branch from it like veins. In black and white, the relief can be read in the shapes of the blocks, even though no contour lines are drawn.
