Vignola lies in the province of Modena, where the Panaro river leaves the Apennine foothills and runs out onto the flat Po plain. The map shows a compact historic centre above the river, with the medieval Rocca at its edge. Newer quarters spread across the level ground beyond it, toward the surrounding farms.
In Italy the town is best known for its cherries, which grow in orchards throughout the surrounding countryside. It is also the birthplace of Jacopo Barozzi, the Renaissance architect known simply as Vignola. Builders across Europe used his treatise on the classical orders for centuries after its publication.
A Vignola map poster balances two textures: the tight streets around the Rocca and the old core, and the regular fields and farm roads of the plain. The Panaro cuts a clean line between them, and the hills rising to the south give the edge of the frame a sense of place.
