Villa Alemana lies in the Valparaíso Region of Chile, in the Marga Marga valley behind the coastal cities of Viña del Mar and Valparaíso. It grew mainly as a residential town, with a milder, sunnier climate than the coast. On the map it stretches along the valley, and the surrounding hills set clear limits on its shape.
The Valparaíso metro, the regional commuter rail line, runs through the valley and connects Villa Alemana to the coast. From above, the railway is the city's spine. Streets form a regular grid on either side, and they become more irregular as neighbourhoods climb the lower slopes of the hills.
