Vĩnh Châu lies on the sea coast at the southern edge of the Mekong Delta, in an area formerly part of Sóc Trăng province and now administered within Can Tho City. The land is almost perfectly flat, and from above it reads as a patchwork of rectangular plots, ponds and straight canals, with a few roads connecting the town to the shore.
The area is known across Vietnam for its shallots, grown on sandy ridges near the coast, and for aquaculture ponds that fill much of the surrounding land. A large part of the population is Khmer, and Khmer Theravada pagodas appear among the villages around the town, alongside long-established Vietnamese and Chinese communities.
A Vĩnh Châu map poster is less about a dense centre than about pattern: the geometry of canals and ponds, the long line of the coast and the small grid of the town where the roads meet. In a monochrome style the delta becomes almost abstract, a calm and graphic record of a working landscape.
