Vinica lies in eastern North Macedonia, where the flat Kočani valley meets the hills to the south. The town centre sits on gently rising ground, with streets that begin in a loose grid near the valley floor and become more irregular as they climb toward the hills behind.
The town is known for the Vinica Fortress, an archaeological site on a hill above the town where a remarkable collection of early Christian terracotta icons was discovered. These clay tiles are now among the most celebrated finds in the country, and the fortress hill gives the town a clear high point on the map.
