Vlorë lies on the southwest coast of Albania, along the curve of a wide, sheltered bay. The coastline dominates the map: a long line of beaches and promenade to the south, the port and city centre to the north, and hills rising behind the streets. Across the water, the Karaburun Peninsula closes the bay to the west, and Sazan Island sits near its mouth.
In November 1912 Albanian independence was declared in Vlorë, and that history marks the city, most visibly at the Independence Monument on Flag Square. On the hills above town, the old castle of Kaninë looks down over the plain. The sixteenth-century Muradie Mosque, one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city, stands near the centre.
North of the city, Narta Lagoon and salt pans spread across a flat coastal plain. To the south, the road follows the coast toward the Albanian Riviera. A Vlorë map poster brings together sea, hills and a city that stretches along the water, and the result is easy to recognise even without a label.
