Warnes lies in the Santa Cruz Department of eastern Bolivia, north of the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, in flat, warm lowlands. Like many towns founded in the Spanish colonial tradition, it is built around a central plaza, with streets forming a regular grid of square blocks radiating from it.
The town and its province are named after Ignacio Warnes, a leader of the independence struggle in this part of South America. In recent decades the area has grown with the expanding Santa Cruz region. On the map, industrial zones, new neighbourhoods and highways now surround the original grid, with large agricultural plots beyond them.
