Waterbury lies in the Naugatuck River valley in western Connecticut, surrounded by steep hills on all sides. From above, the downtown sits in the valley floor where the river bends, and neighbourhoods climb the slopes around it in irregular street patterns that follow the ridges instead of forming a grid.
The city was once the centre of the American brass industry, which earned it the name Brass City, and long mill buildings still line parts of the river and rail corridor. At the centre, the Waterbury Green forms a long open space surrounded by civic buildings. Nearby, the former Union Station's clock tower stands above the tracks.
Interstate 84 and Route 8 meet just outside downtown in a tall, stacked interchange known locally as the Mixmaster, and its curves stand out clearly on the map. A Waterbury map poster shows how the valley, the river, the old factories and the highways all fit together in a tight, hilly setting.
