Wattenscheid lies in the heart of the Ruhr area, on the western side of Bochum, of which it has been a borough since 1975. From above, it is a dense patchwork of residential streets, former industrial sites and green spaces, with the A40 motorway cutting a firm line through the area.
The old town centre forms a compact knot of streets, from which roads radiate toward neighbouring districts. A Wattenscheid map poster shows how closely it is woven into the surrounding cities, with built-up areas giving way to parks and allotment gardens rather than open country.
Like much of the Ruhr, Wattenscheid grew with coal mining and heavy industry. Many local residents still consider it a town in its own right, and its football club, SG Wattenscheid 09, once played in the Bundesliga.
