Weldiya is the administrative centre of the North Wollo Zone in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. It lies in highland country, and its map is shaped by the main road running north through the town. Streets branch off this central route and climb into the surrounding slopes, so the built-up area stretches along the valley rather than spreading evenly.
The town sits on one of the main routes through northern Ethiopia, and it has long been a stopping point for travellers and traders moving between regions. It is home to Weldiya University, founded in the last decade, which has added new buildings and activity to the town's edges.
