Welland sits in the middle of the Niagara Peninsula. On the map it is defined by water. The old channel of the Welland Canal runs straight through downtown, and a wide bypass channel, opened in the early 1970s, carries ships around the city to the east. The Welland River crosses under the old canal and meanders across the plain.
The canal made Welland an industrial city. Once the ships moved to the bypass, the old channel through downtown became a quiet recreational waterway, now used for rowing, paddling and flatwater sport. Welland is also known as the Rose City, after its gardens and parks.
