Westfield lies in Hamilton County, just north of Indianapolis. It was founded in the 1830s by Quakers, and the town played a part in the Underground Railroad, helping people escaping slavery on their way north. For much of its history it was a small farming community; in recent decades it has become one of the fastest-growing cities in Indiana.
The map shows that growth clearly. The small historic centre sits at a crossroads, with short, straight streets typical of old Indiana towns. Around it, newer neighbourhoods fill large squares defined by the county road grid, each with its own layout of curving streets, crescents and ponds. A major highway runs through the city on a north-south line.
