Westhoughton Map Poster & Print
Westhoughton lies between Bolton and Wigan in the north-west of England, and its map is shaped by a long main road that runs through the centre with streets branching off on either side. Rows of terraced houses give parts of the town a close, ribbed texture, while newer estates spread outward in looser curves and cul-de-sacs.
The town's past is industrial. In 1812 Westhoughton Mill was burned during Luddite protests, and in December 1910 the Pretoria Pit disaster at the nearby Hulton Colliery killed 344 men and boys, one of the worst mining accidents in British history. Today the M61 motorway passes close to the town, a clean, sweeping line on any map of the area.
