Wheeling is a village in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, mostly in Cook County with a small part in Lake County. Its map is shaped by three things: the Des Plaines River, the long diagonal of Milwaukee Avenue and the grid of Midwestern suburban streets that fills in between them.
The Des Plaines runs north to south along the village's edge, bordered by forest preserves that show up as a green, winding corridor. Milwaukee Avenue, an old route leading out of Chicago, cuts across the grid at an angle, and the stretch through Wheeling is known locally for its many restaurants. Chicago Executive Airport occupies a large site at the southern edge.
