Whitstable Map Poster & Print
Whitstable sits on the north coast of Kent, where the land meets the wide, shallow mouth of the Thames Estuary. On a map the town is shaped by its shoreline. A long line of shingle beach runs east to west, and the grid of streets and narrow alleys behind it runs inland from the water, broken only by the small square harbour.
The town has long been known for its oysters, harvested from the beds off the coast. East of the harbour, the grassy Tankerton Slopes rise above a row of beach huts, and at low tide a shingle spit called The Street reaches out into the sea. The Canterbury and Whitstable Railway, opened in 1830, was one of the earliest passenger railways in the world.
A Whitstable map poster shows all of this as clean black line on white. The coast becomes a single confident edge, the harbour a small notch in it, and the sea a quiet empty field. Inland, the lanes of the old fishing town give way to newer suburban streets and the fields beyond, and the whole print reads as a portrait of a town that faces the water.

East of the centre, the shore road curves along a grassy bank above the beach, and the tidal spit known as The Street points out into the estuary.
Estuary edge
The long, gently curving shoreline gives the poster a strong horizon. The shallow water of the Thames Estuary fills the top of the frame as open, quiet space.
