Winchester Map Poster & Print
Winchester lies in the valley of the River Itchen in Hampshire, and its plan still reflects the Roman and Saxon town beneath it. The High Street runs east to west through the centre, rising from the river crossing towards the Westgate, with smaller streets branching off at intervals. To the south, the cathedral close forms a large, calm open space within the old town.
The city was once the capital of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex and is closely associated with King Alfred, whose statue stands at the eastern end of the Broadway. Winchester Cathedral, one of the longest medieval cathedrals in Europe, sits at the heart of the map, while the Great Hall, home to the painted Round Table, stands near the Westgate.
A Winchester map poster brings out the contrast between the tight medieval streets and the green corridors of the Itchen, whose channels and water meadows run south past Winchester College towards St Cross. Beyond the centre, residential streets climb the valley sides, and the rolling chalk country of the South Downs begins just to the east.
