Winston-Salem is two towns joined in 1913: Salem, founded in the eighteenth century by Moravian settlers, and Winston, which grew around tobacco and textiles. On a map the join is still visible. The downtown sits on a tight grid of blocks with a compact skyline, while just to the south the older Salem streets form a small, careful plan around a central square.
The R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company made the city famous, and its Art Deco headquarters, the Reynolds Building, served as a model for the Empire State Building. Old Salem is preserved as a living history district, and Wake Forest University occupies a wooded campus on the northwest side of the city.
A Winston-Salem map poster shows a Piedmont city of rolling ground, where the grid of the core gives way to curving suburban streets, creeks and tree-lined parks. A downtown highway cuts across the centre in a sweeping line, and the pattern of old mill and factory districts can still be traced in the larger blocks near the rail lines.
