Włocławek lies on the Vistula in central Poland, in the historic region of Kujawy. From above, the old town sits along the river's left bank, with streets running back from the water and newer districts spreading to the south and west. Upstream, the dam built in the 1960s and 1970s created a long reservoir, which appears as a broad band of water extending east of the city.
The city has been the seat of a bishopric for centuries, and its Gothic cathedral stands near the river. Włocławek is also known for its faience, a hand-painted ceramic tradition with distinctive patterns. Industry has played a major role in its modern history, alongside its position as a regional centre for Kujawy.
