Wŏnsan lies on North Korea's east coast, on a wide bay opening onto the Sea of Japan, known in Korea as the East Sea. On the map, the city curves along the inner shore, with the harbour and port facilities facing the calm waters of the bay. Hills rise behind the city, limiting its growth inland and giving it a long, narrow shape along the coast.
To the south-east, the Kalma peninsula extends into the bay, a long strip of sand with beaches on its seaward side. It has recently been developed as a large beach resort area, and its outline is one of the most distinctive features on the map. Small islands dot the bay, and roads and a railway follow the coast north and south.
