Wote is the administrative centre of Makueni County, in the semi-arid country south-east of Nairobi. From above, the town is compact: a small core of streets where the main roads meet, with buildings thinning quickly into scattered plots and farmland. On paper, the pattern reads as a short, dense knot with long lines reaching out from it in several directions.
The land around Wote is mostly dry, with seasonal watercourses that run full only after the rains. On a map these appear as fine, wandering lines that cut across the rural grid of tracks and field boundaries.
