Wuzhishan lies in the mountainous centre of Hainan, China's tropical island province. The city takes its name from Five Finger Mountain, the highest peak on the island, whose summits rise nearby. On a map the town fills a narrow valley, with streets following a river and steep, wooded slopes on every side.
Because level ground is scarce, the urban area is long and compact. Roads wind out through the hills toward the coast and other towns. The surrounding terrain is thick tropical forest, and it takes up most of the map, leaving the town as a small, dense shape in the middle.
A Wuzhishan map poster depicts a highland community in a region home to Li and Miao peoples, far from Hainan's beach resorts. In monochrome, the contrast between the tight town and the wide mountain landscape is striking.
