Xiangcheng is a county town in central Henan, southwest of Xuchang, on the wide plain that forms the heartland of the Central Plains. The ground is almost flat, and the map is dominated by straight lines: long avenues crossing at right angles, newer districts laid out in large blocks, and rural roads running out to villages in every direction.
This part of Henan has been settled for thousands of years, and Xiangcheng carries a long record in Chinese historical sources. On the map, the older part of the town reads as a tighter, finer weave of streets, while development of recent decades has added broad roads and larger plots around it, extending the town outward across former fields.
