This Xichang lies in the far south of Guangxi, in the coastal lowlands that face the Gulf of Tonkin. It should not be confused with the better-known city of the same name in Sichuan. On the map the setting is low and level. The town's streets gather around a few main roads, and farmland presses in from every side.
Southern Guangxi is a subtropical region of paddy fields, ponds and small rivers that wind toward the sea, and that landscape shapes how the area looks from above. Water appears as irregular patches and threads between the fields, while the built-up area forms a denser cluster of short streets and lanes at its centre.
