Xicotepec de Juárez lies in the Sierra Norte of Puebla, a range of steep, forested mountains that drop toward the Gulf lowlands. The town cannot spread out as it would on a plain. Streets bend along contour lines, climb in switchbacks and stop where ravines cut into the land.
The region is coffee country, and the humid mountain climate supports dense green vegetation right to the edge of town. Xicotepec has been named a Pueblo Mágico, the Mexican designation for towns with notable cultural and historic character. It is also known for its local traditions and its viewpoints over the surrounding sierra.
