Xinhe is a town in northern Jiangsu Province, in the countryside of the Xuzhou area, on the level plain of the Huai River basin. Here the landscape is shaped more by people than by relief. Fields, drainage ditches and roads divide the ground into a precise mosaic, and the town appears within it as a denser block of streets and buildings.
Water management matters greatly on this plain, where channels have been dug and straightened over generations to drain the land and irrigate crops. The town is a local centre for the surrounding villages, with markets, schools and services along its main streets.
