Xinshi lies in central Hubei, where the Jianghan Plain begins to give way to low hills. It is a local centre for the surrounding countryside, with a denser core of streets and shops surrounded by newer residential districts and, beyond them, farmland. The landscape around it is a mix of level fields, ponds and gentle rises.
From above, the town's structure is easy to read. Main roads lead in from the countryside and meet at the centre, and blocks become more regular toward the newer edges. Ponds and small reservoirs are scattered across the surrounding land, each one a small pale shape on the map, typical of this well-watered part of China.
