Xinzhou sits in the Xinding Basin of northern Shanxi, a broad plain drained by the Hutuo River and surrounded by mountain ranges. The city's map is a regular grid of wide avenues and large blocks, typical of recent Chinese urban growth, around a smaller historic centre. At the edges, farmland and villages fill the flat basin before the land rises toward the hills.
The prefecture named after the city includes Mount Wutai, one of the four sacred mountains of Chinese Buddhism and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It also includes the Yanmen Pass, a historic gateway on the Great Wall. The city itself is the administrative and transport centre for this mountainous region.
