Xiugu is a county seat in eastern Jiangxi, set among the gentle hills and farmland of the region. From above, the town appears as a compact grid of streets surrounded by a patchwork of fields, ponds and villages, with low wooded ridges rising around the edges. The contrast between the dense centre and the fine pattern of the countryside gives the map a clear structure.
Small rivers and streams wind through the area, and many of the surrounding villages sit beside ponds and irrigation channels, a common landscape in this part of southern China.
