Xiulin lies in southern Hubei, on the flat plain along the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. This stretch of the river is known for its wide meanders, and the landscape around the town reflects centuries of the river shifting its course. On the map, the Yangtze is the dominant presence, a broad band of water curving past the built-up area.
Tall embankments protect the town from floods, and on a map they appear as long, firm lines along the riverbank. Behind them, the streets form a compact urban area that gives way to farmland, fishponds and small lakes. The fields and ponds are divided into regular rectangles, a pattern typical of the Jianghan Plain.
