Xunchang is in the south of Sichuan, in the hilly country of Yibin prefecture, where the land folds into many small valleys. Towns here grow along the valley floors, and Xunchang follows that pattern. On the map its streets run close to a river, and the built area stretches along the valley instead of spreading evenly in every direction.
The centre is fairly compact, with a mix of older irregular streets and newer, wider roads. Where the ground rises, the street pattern becomes looser and the roads start to curve with the slopes. The edges of the map are mostly terraced hills and farmland, crossed by a few winding roads.
