Yan Besar lies on the coast of Kedah in northwest Peninsular Malaysia, the main town of Yan district. It sits in a narrow band of lowland between Gunung Jerai, the tall isolated mountain that dominates this stretch of coast, and the shallow waters of the Strait of Malacca. On a map the town is compact, its streets gathered along a few main roads.
The surrounding landscape is agricultural, with rice paddies and village settlements covering the flat ground and small rivers flowing from the mountain to the sea. The map shows long straight field bunds and irrigation lines on the plain, and roads threading past kampung houses before converging on the town centre.
Gunung Jerai rises steeply to the east, and its lower slopes shape the roads that approach from that direction.
