Yanfolila is a town in the Sikasso Region of southern Mali, near the border with Guinea. It is the main town of the Wassoulou area, a region known throughout West Africa for its music and its hunting traditions. On a map, the town is compact, with a few main roads and a mesh of smaller streets and paths around a central market area.
The country around Yanfolila is wetter and greener than Mali's north. Wooded savanna, farmland and river valleys stretch in every direction. Roads out of town lead to villages and toward the Guinean border, and the area has also seen the growth of gold mining in recent decades. Across the plain, small settlements appear as dots linked by thin tracks.
