Yasnyy Map Poster & Print
Yasnyy is in the far east of Orenburg Oblast, close to the border with Kazakhstan, in open, treeless steppe. It was built in the Soviet period as a town for the workers at the nearby Kiembay asbestos deposit. The mine is still the reason it exists, and on a map the vast quarries and spoil heaps are as prominent as the town itself.
The residential area is laid out as a compact grid of straight streets and apartment blocks, cut off sharply from the empty land around it. Roads and a railway link the town to the region. Nearby is the Dombarovsky air base, from which commercial satellites were launched on converted missiles, so Yasnyy's name has also been attached to launches from the site.

Large open pits and spoil heaps from asbestos mining lie next to the town. On the poster they form broad, irregular shapes that dominate one side of the frame.
Open steppe
Beyond the town and mine, the land is almost empty, crossed only by a few roads and tracks. This emptiness gives the composition a sense of scale.
