Yavatmāl sits on a plateau in the Vidarbha region of eastern Maharashtra. From above, it shows a dense core of irregular lanes surrounded by looser, newer blocks. Roads leave the centre toward neighbouring towns, and the built-up area thins quickly into farmland. Nobody planned the outline. It grew along the main routes, and the map still shows where each stretch of road drew new houses toward it.
The town is the headquarters of Yavatmāl district, one of the major cotton-growing areas of Maharashtra. You can see that setting at the edges of any map of the place. The tight urban texture gives way to a wide pattern of field tracks and scattered villages. The town serves the countryside around it, and the countryside supplies the town.
