Yellandu lies in Bhadradri Kothagudem district in Telangana, in hilly, partly forested country. The town is closely tied to coal: mining around Yellandu goes back to the late nineteenth century, and it is associated with the early history of the Singareni Collieries, which still shapes the region's economy.
On a map the town appears as a compact cluster of streets surrounded by open land, water tanks and the traces of mining activity. Roads lead out in several directions towards villages and colliery areas, while the edges of the frame fill with forest and hills.
