Yigou lies in northern Henan, on the plain where the land begins to rise toward the Taihang Mountains to the west. From above, the town is organised along a few straight main roads, with blocks filling in between them and farmland reaching out to the edges. The terrain is gentle, and the pattern is orderly and clear.
This part of Henan belongs to the old heartland of northern China, a landscape farmed for thousands of years. On the map that history shows less in monuments than in the density of villages and the network of roads connecting them. The nearby city of Hebi is one of the larger centres of the area.
